Roof leaking in Munster? What to do right now, why roofs leak, whether insurance covers it, repair costs, and how fast an emergency roofer can reach you.

Established 2010Fully InsuredVAT Registered3-Year Guarantee

A leaking roof feels like an emergency, but most leaks are contained quickly and repaired for far less than people fear. If water is coming through your ceiling right now, take a breath: the steps below will limit the damage in the next ten minutes, and a proper repair will follow. This guide covers what to do the moment a roof starts leaking, why roofs leak across Munster, whether your insurance is likely to cover it, what the fix costs in 2026, and how fast help arrives. Munster Gutters has been fixing roofs and gutters across the six Munster counties since 2010.

Roof leaking right now: what to do first

The first ten minutes

Start by containing the water. Put a bucket, basin or deep tray under the drip, and lay old towels around it to stop splashing. Move furniture, rugs, electronics and anything of value out from under the leak, and lift the corners of carpet if water is spreading. If the drip is fast, swap in a second container before the first overflows. You are just buying time until a roofer can get on the roof safely.

Ease a bulging ceiling safely

If you see the ceiling sagging or a brown blister forming, that is water pooling above the plasterboard and it can come down all at once. Put a bucket underneath, and if you can do so safely from a step, gently pierce the centre of the bulge with a screwdriver to drain it in a controlled stream rather than collapse the whole ceiling. If you cannot reach it safely, leave it and keep everyone out of the room until help arrives.

Keep water away from electrics

Water and electricity are the real danger in a leak, not the leak itself. If water is anywhere near a light fitting, socket or your fuse board, do not touch the switches with wet hands, and if in any doubt switch off the affected circuit at the consumer unit. Once things are contained, take a few photos and a short video of the leak and any obvious cause outside, because your insurer will want them later.

Then arrange a roofer

Once the water is contained and safe, arrange a roofer to make the roof watertight. If it is actively pouring in during a storm, this is an emergency roof repair and should not wait. We make the affected area watertight on the first visit, then return to carry out the permanent repair once the weather clears. You can request a call using the free quote form on this page.

Why roofs leak in Munster

Munster takes the full force of Atlantic weather, and our roofs pay for it. Storm systems roll straight in off the ocean carrying wind-driven rain, and heavy rainfall is a fact of life from the Kerry coast to the Waterford Greenway. That combination finds any weakness in a roof and pushes water through it. Most leaks we attend come down to one of four causes.

Slipped or cracked slates and tiles are the most common. Once a gale lifts a single slate, wind-driven rain gets under the covering and tracks along the timbers before it drips through, often a good distance from the actual hole. Failed flashing is next: the lead sealing the joins around chimneys, valleys and abutments corrodes and lifts over time, and these junctions are the first place a leak shows up on older properties.

Blocked gutters are the quiet cause people miss. When leaves and moss clog a gutter, heavy Munster rain backs up under the edge of the roof, soaking the fascia and rotting the timber behind it. Finally, failed flat-roof felt on extensions, porches and dormers cracks with age, and once it splits the water is straight into the room below. A leak blamed on the slates is very often one of these instead, which is why we check the whole system.

Does home insurance cover a roof leak?

It depends on the cause, and the line insurers draw is between sudden damage and gradual wear. If a named storm rips slates off or lifts a section of flat roof and water gets in, that is usually covered by the buildings section of your home insurance, which is exactly why those photos matter. Report it promptly and keep receipts for any temporary repairs you paid for to stop further damage.

What is generally not covered is a leak caused by gradual wear and tear, such as slowly corroded flashing, a felt roof at the end of its life, or gutters that were never cleared. Insurers treat that as maintenance. Every policy is different, so read yours before you assume either way, and we are happy to provide a written report of what we find, which helps with a claim.

What does it cost to fix a roof leak?

Most leaks are cheaper to fix than people expect, especially if caught early before the water rots timber or ruins a ceiling. These are honest Munster ranges for 2026, and you get a written, fixed price after a free survey so nothing changes on completion.

  • Minor leak repair such as a slipped slate or small leak: €300 to €800
  • Ridge, flashing and chimney repairs: €600 to €1,500
  • Emergency call-out, credited against the repair: €200 to €600

What moves the price is the scope, the roof material, how hard the access is, and how long the leak has been left. A quick inspection tells us which side of the range you are on. See the full detail on our roof repair service page, and if the leak is urgent our emergency roof repairs page covers how the rapid call-out works.

How fast does help arrive?

Munster Gutters is a fully insured, family-run business founded in 2010 and rated 5.0 from 27 Google reviews. For an active leak we prioritise getting you watertight quickly, and most repairs are done in a single day once we are on site, with larger flashing or flat-roof work taking two to three. Every survey is carried out by an experienced roofer, not a salesperson, and founder Patrick Foley and the team work right across the six counties, from Cork to Tralee and Dungarvan. Roof leak FAQs

What should I do the moment my roof starts leaking?

Contain the water with a bucket, move valuables clear, and keep water well away from any electrics, switching off the affected circuit if it is close to a light or socket. If the ceiling is bulging, put a bucket under it and, only if you can reach it safely, pierce the centre to drain it in a controlled way. Then take photos for your insurer and arrange a roofer to make the roof watertight.

Why does my roof leak in a spot that is nowhere near the damage?

Water almost never drips straight down through the hole. Once it gets under a slipped slate or past failed flashing, it runs along the timbers and underlay until it finds the lowest point, then drips through there. That is why the stain inside can be several feet from the actual fault outside, and why it takes an experienced eye to trace it to the source.

Will my home insurance cover the leak?

Usually yes if it is sudden storm damage, such as a gale lifting slates or tearing a flat roof, which is covered by most buildings policies. Gradual wear and tear, like slowly corroded flashing or a felt roof at the end of its life, is generally treated as maintenance and not covered. Check your own policy, report storm damage promptly, and keep your photos and receipts for temporary repairs.

Can you stop the leak straight away, or do I wait for the full repair?

We make the affected area watertight on the first visit so no more water gets in, then return to carry out the permanent repair once conditions allow. Emergency call-outs are credited against the repair, so you are not paying twice.

How much does it cost to fix a leaking roof?

Most leak repairs in Munster fall between €300 and €1,500 in 2026, depending on the cause. A slipped slate or small leak is typically €300 to €800, while ridge, flashing and chimney work runs higher. An emergency call-out is €200 to €600 and is credited against the repair. You get a written, fixed price after a free survey, so the figure never changes on completion.
